I LOVE the artwork. The illustrator is of my favorites - her style and representation is unique, illustrative and beautiful. The design of the illustrations and characters is lovely.
Here is why three stars: the story. It is severely lacking. The story itself begins like it could be great overall, however it seems the plot eventually goes downhill, almost like it doesn't know where it's going. The characters don't feel developed either. Why is she a princess? There is such a small explanation of this. Why is she doing what she's doing? Why do people like her? The jester is even less developed. The ending is rushed and doesn't meld at all.
The story could use some compressing overall and fuller development in the core aspects.

The Princess Who Had No Kingdom 9781846160424 Books Reviews

Liked the premise but just a tad too long for bed-time.
Amazing book! The illustrations in this book are so breath taking I went and bought all books illustrated by the same person. The story is very sweet as well.
Since getting this for Christmas our girls have asked for it three nights in a row. Whether it's because of the gorgeous art, the love story or the clever inversions of Princess cliches or a combination of all 3 I can't say but this is a rare picture book that parent and kids can enjoy.

The story has a princess driving her cart and taking odds jobs as she searches the land for her kingdom. How do we know she's a princess? Well, the book tells us, she looks like one, and everyone calls her princess, so there you go. As a princess with no kingdom she's treated with some respect but not much, fed the second-best biscuits or offered a stool not a chair,. The ending is just as clever as the premise, and a nice breath of fresh air for parents tired of princess stores and princess-obsessed kids.

Sarah Gibb's art is as gorgeous as ever and we'll have to track down some more of her books.
The duo of Jones and Gibbs have another winner here. A great story of a strong female protagonist who actively pursues the life she wants and isn't dazzled by wealth or rank. The illustrations are phenomenal, and I love looking at them with my daughter. One star off as the word flow can be a bit twisted for reading aloud.
Love this team of writer and illustrator. I have several of their books, and they are all great. Highly recommend the other book like this, The Princess Who Had No Fortune. I actually like that one even better than this one, though they are both very good. They make a great set!
My daughter loves all of these books, and this is one of her favorites. The art is beautiful, and the story is nice. I particularly like that it is girly without any creepy messages - there are dresses and pink and prettiness without the total lack of agency that usually goes with it. The love interest I like a lot as well (as there's even a love interest for the horse, lol).
I absolutely love this book. We own the hard cover version and I read it to my daughters whenever I get the chance. The art is beautiful and the language sublime.

BUT

The Edition I just purchased has different text than the hard cover version. The effect is subtle, but profound. While the story is the same, the imagery and flow of words while reading out loud are crippled in places. Don't know the meaning of "gateau" or "barouche"? You are reading it on a - LOOK IT UP! Please please please don't write for the lowest common denominator; Write a smart book for smart people (and keep it that way).
